The ARM (Associate in Risk Management) designation was fully redesigned in 2026 — new course content, new course titles, and a fully online format. If you’re partway through the old program, your progress is preserved, but there’s a hard deadline to know about.
Why was ARM updated?
This is the first overhaul of the ARM program in more than five years. The update reflects how risk management has changed — more emphasis on AI, automation, and data analytics in identifying and managing risk, alongside the core techniques (SWOT analysis, risk registers, root cause analysis, FMEA) the designation has always covered.
What changed?
- ARM still requires 3 core courses plus an ethics course — the structure didn’t change, the content did.
- Course titles were updated under the same course numbers:

- The ethics requirement (Ethics 311: Ethical Decision Making in Risk & Insurance) is now included free with the new courses.
- The new courses are 100% online — there is no printed textbook option for the new ARM program.
- ARM 400 and 401 content was consolidated into fewer chapters; ARM 402 remains nine chapters.
- CE credit filing for the new courses is in progress and pending state approval — see CE Credits Overview for how to check your state’s status once available.
What about the retiring courses?
Important: The previous ARM 400, 401, and 402 (old titles) are being discontinued. You must pass your exam by September 15, 2026 — the end of the current testing window — to test on the old material.
Did I lose credit for courses I already completed?
No. If you’ve already passed an exam under the old ARM 400, 401, or 402, that credit stands — you don’t need to retake anything.
Note: If you purchased the old course materials but haven’t tested yet, you have until September 15, 2026 to sit the exam. Passing before that date gives you credit toward the corresponding new course (old ARM 400 → new ARM 400, and so on). If you don’t test in time, you’ll need to complete the new version of that course instead.

Do I need to start over?
No. This works the same way as any other program update: your Progress Tracker reflects your completion history and shows exactly what’s left. See What Happens When a Program Is Updated? for how that works generally.
Does this affect my cross-credits to other designations?
Completing ARM courses still earns credit toward CPCU and several other designations (ACRR, ACRM, AIDA, AINS, AIS, ASLI). If you’re pursuing CPCU alongside ARM, see ARM Path to CPCU for how those credits apply.
