Are Study Materials Tax Deductible?

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 10:16 AM

Important: The Institutes is a not-for-profit professional development organization, not an accredited academic institution. We do not issue 1098-T forms, accept GI Bill benefits, process student loan deferments, or qualify for federal financial aid programs (FAFSA, Pell Grants, the Lifetime Learning Credit, etc.). Those benefits are reserved for accredited colleges and universities.

The Institutes is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit professional development organization. However, it is not an accredited academic institution.

What This Means for Taxes

  • Lifetime Learning Credit — The Institutes does not qualify for this federal tax credit because it is not an accredited educational institution.
  • Business expense deduction — You may be able to deduct study materials as a business expense if they are required for your current job. Consult your tax advisor.
  • Employer reimbursement — Many employers reimburse designation study costs through education benefits programs. Check with your HR department.
