My Course Expired — Can I Get an Extension?

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 10:16 AM

Online course materials are available for one year after purchase. After that, they expire and you can no longer access the content.

If Your Course Is About to Expire

Important: Course access extensions require an active exam registration. You must be registered for an exam in an upcoming testing window before an extension can be granted.

Contact Customer Success to request a one-time 30-day extension. Extension requests are handled on a case-by-case basis.

If Your Course Has Already Expired

If your course has expired and you still need to complete it, you will need to repurchase the course materials. Any exam registrations purchased separately remain valid within their registered testing window.

Reinstating Course Access After a Long Time

Some students return after a long break — months or years — and ask whether their old course access can be reinstated rather than repurchased. The standard answer is no: course materials are valid for one year from purchase, and after that they require repurchase. The course content has likely been updated in the interim, and the current materials reflect the current exam.

There are a few cases where it’s worth contacting Customer Success before repurchasing:

  • You have an active exam registration that hasn’t been used yet — extensions are still possible while the exam is open.
  • Your program was updated after you originally purchased — see What Happens When a Program Is Updated. Cross-credit may apply, reducing the scope of what you need to repurchase.
  • You’re returning to The Institutes after a hiatus more broadly (lost account access, changed employers, etc.) — see Returning to The Institutes After a Hiatus for the recovery path.

Note: “Reinstating” expired access is not the same as transferring an exam to a new testing window. If you’ve moved your exam, you still need to address course materials separately — see Understanding Exam Transfers & Study Materials.

What to Know

  • Expiration notices are sent automatically. If you’ve already passed your exam, you can disregard the notice — it does not affect your grade or completion status.
  • Online materials and exams are for your use only. Sharing account credentials puts your progress and privacy at risk.
  • Do not attempt to re-purchase through the cart if the system shows you’re already enrolled — contact Customer Success instead.
