States Requiring NPN for CE Filing

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 10:16 AM

Some states require your NPN (National Producer Number) to be on file with The Institutes before CE credits can be reported. Other states use your state license number.

How to Add Your NPN

  1. Log in at TheInstitutes.org.
  2. Go to My Account > Profile > Licenses.
  3. Enter your NPN and/or state license number.
  4. Save your changes.

Note: Your NPN and license information must be on file before you register for your exam — not just before you test. Adding it after registration may require a correction process.

Don’t Know Your NPN?

Look it up at nipr.com.

Year-End Deadlines (NIPR / State DOI)

Important: State CE-reporting deadlines are based on when your state DOI processes the credit, not when you passed the exam. Credits are reported by The Institutes within 2 business days of passing, but the state may take 7–10 business days to display them. Texas / TDI and other states with hard December 31 deadlines work the same way — passing on December 30 does not guarantee the credit appears on your state record before year-end. The Institutes cannot retroactively change the filing date or persuade NIPR/TDI that credits were earned before a deadline if they post afterward. Plan to complete deadline-driven CE exams at least 2–3 weeks before the state’s cutoff.
