Virtual Exam Proctoring: How It Works

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 10:17 AM

Institutes designation exams are taken virtually with online proctoring. Your exam session is recorded — including your screen, webcam, and audio — to maintain the integrity and value of your designation.

Important: Exams are not monitored live. Recordings are conducted by The Institutes’ proctoring partner, Talview, and reviewed by The Institutes’ Assessments team only as needed. Flags do not result in automatic failure, and AI does not make pass/fail decisions.

What You Need

  • Laptop or desktop computer (mobile devices and tablets are not supported)
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • A stable internet connection
  • The latest version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox
  • A quiet, well-lit, distraction-free space

Tip: Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection at least 48 hours before your exam using the Tech Check.

What’s Allowed

  • Scratch paper — permitted for calculations during the exam (no study notes)
  • Basic calculator — a non-programmable calculator without memory storage is allowed

What’s Not Allowed

  • Study notes, books, course materials, or open websites
  • Phones, tablets, second computers, smartwatches, or other devices
  • Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT)
  • Communication with anyone during the exam
  • Multiple monitors (use only one monitor with your webcam)
  • Copying, photographing, transcribing, or sharing exam content in any form

What Happens During the Exam

  1. Log in to your Institutes account and go to My Courses & Exams.
  2. Find and launch your exam.
  3. Complete the Exam Administration Affidavit and Agreement.
  4. You’ll be guided through the proctoring setup for your device.
  5. The timer starts when you click Open Exam — it cannot be paused.
  6. You have 65 minutes to complete 50 questions.
  7. You’ll receive your pass/non-pass result immediately upon submission.

You will be asked to consent to recording before starting. Recording is a requirement — it cannot be opted out of. Your webcam must remain on for the entire exam. If the camera is not active throughout, you may be required to retake the exam. All recordings are handled in compliance with international data privacy standards, including GDPR.

Technical Issues

“Unsupported Network” error: Your network doesn’t meet the minimum requirements for a secure exam session. Try switching to a different network and disabling any VPNs.

Other technical issues: First try reconnecting and relaunching your exam. If the problem continues, contact Customer Success.
