How to Register for an Exam

Modified on Fri, 8 May at 12:06 PM

You can register for an exam at any time by purchasing an exam seat for an upcoming testing window through your Institutes account.

Before You Start

  • You’ll need an active Institutes account. Create one here if you haven’t already.
  • Know which exam you need to take. If you’re unsure, see What Course Should I Start With?
  • Have a payment method ready (credit card, corporate billing account, or prepaid agreement code). If using a corporate billing account, get the account number from your manager or HR before starting.

Important: Purchasing course materials does not register you for an exam. Course enrollment and exam registration are separate steps — you must purchase an exam seat separately, even if your course package includes an exam attempt.

Steps

  1. Log in to your account at TheInstitutes.org.
  2. Go to My Courses & Exams, or navigate to your designation program page.
  3. Select the exam you want to register for.
  4. Choose your preferred testing window (four per year — see below).
  5. Complete your purchase through checkout.

You’ll see the exam in your My Courses & Exams dashboard once registration is confirmed.

Testing Windows

The Institutes offer four exam testing windows per year:

Window Dates
Q1 January 15 – March 15
Q2 April 15 – June 15
Q3 July 15 – September 15
Q4 October 15 – December 15

You can take your exam at any time during your registered window — day or night — up until 11:59 p.m. ET on the final day. No appointment or scheduling is needed.

Important: The testing window you select when purchasing a course is only a planning estimate — it does not lock you into that window. You choose your actual exam window when you register for the exam separately.

Good to Know

  • Exam limit: You may register for up to 4 unique exams per testing window.
  • Not ready? You can transfer to a later window for a fee. See Understanding Exam Transfers & Study Materials.
  • Missed your window? If you don’t test by the window’s end date, your exam registration is forfeited and you’ll need to register and pay again.
  • Exam format: 50 multiple-choice questions, 65 minutes, passing score of 70%. Results appear immediately as pass/non-pass; official records update within 48 hours.
