CPCU Matriculation: Requirements, Fee & Timing

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 10:17 AM

CPCU matriculation is a one-time requirement to register as a CPCU candidate. It has two parts: a matriculation fee and completion of the online CPCU ethics course. Both must be done before the CPCU designation is awarded.

Important: Paying the matriculation fee alone does not complete the requirement. You must also launch and finish the online matriculation course (“CPCU Code of Professional Conduct”) in your account.

What Matriculation Covers

  • The fee covers review of your matriculation application and ongoing enforcement of the CPCU Code of Professional Conduct for candidates and designees.
  • The online course introduces the Code and the ethical commitments expected of CPCUs.

When to Matriculate

You can take CPCU exams before matriculating, but we recommend matriculating as early as possible so you’re familiar with the Code from the start. The most common time to pay the matriculation fee is at first CPCU exam registration — there’s an option to add it to that order.

Note: If matriculation is your only remaining requirement when you pass your final exam, you’ll need to complete it before the CPCU designation is conferred. Plan to finish the online course before — or shortly after — you pass CPCU 540 if you haven’t already.

How to Complete Matriculation

  1. Pay the matriculation fee — submit it with a CPCU exam registration, or pay it directly from the CPCU Matriculation page on TheInstitutes.org if you missed it earlier.

  2. Log in to your account at TheInstitutes.org.

  3. Go to My Courses & Exams.

  4. Find the CPCU Matriculation online course and select Launch Course.

  5. Work through the course content and complete all quizzes.

Once the course is complete, your matriculation requirement is marked done. If it’s your last remaining requirement, you’ll receive an email officially awarding the CPCU designation.

Industry Experience Requirement

CPCU matriculation requires candidates to have two years of relevant industry experience. If you submit matriculation before reaching the 2-year mark, your record may be placed under review until the experience requirement is met. The matriculation fee is not refunded in the meantime.

If your record is under review and you’ve now met the 2-year requirement, contact Customer Success so they can finalize matriculation. For any other matriculation issue — a fee that didn’t post, a record that didn’t update, anything else — contact Customer Success and we’ll sort it out.

Common Misunderstandings

Important: The matriculation fee is separate from course materials and exam fees. It is not automatically included in any course package or exam registration — it has to be added explicitly.

Matriculating does not make you a member of the CPCU Society — that is a separate organization for networking and continuing education. See CPCU Society, Conferment & Good Standing.
