What Is Prelicensing Education?

Modified on Mon, 13 Apr at 10:35 AM

Prelicensing education helps you prepare for your state Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance licensing exam — building real understanding of insurance concepts, not just memorizing answers. The program is offered in select states, with more being added as regulatory approvals are secured.

How It Works

  • Format: Online, self-paced
  • Access period: 90 days from enrollment
  • Availability: Select states (expanding); you can sign up to be notified when your state becomes available
  • Backed by: The Institutes, with the same depth of content used in designation programs

Package Options

Three packages are available depending on your study needs:

Package What’s Included
Basic Course content, quizzes, practice exams, key concept sheets, flashcards, video content, and a readiness exam
Enhanced (Recommended) Everything in Basic, plus a custom study plan and an expanded exam prep question bank
Pathways (Best Value) Everything in Enhanced, plus enrollment in PRC 110, an Institutes designation course

Common Misunderstandings

Important: Prelicensing courses prepare you to take your state licensing exam — they are not the exam itself. Completing the course does not grant your license; you must still pass the official state exam administered by your state’s Department of Insurance.

Note: Prelicensing education does not count as continuing education (CE) credits. CE credits are for licensed professionals maintaining an existing license. If you need CE courses, see CEU Course Search & Enrollment.
