What is a Designation, Certificate, or Online Course?

Designations

Designations are the most recognized risk management and insurance credentials offered by The Institutes. Think of them as college-level programs in broad subject areas. Each designation is made up of multiple online, self-paced courses, and you’ll take a timed, proctored exam after each course. Once you complete all requirements — including a free ethics course — you’ll earn a diploma.

Popular designations include CPCU, ARM, AINS, AIC, AIDA, and AU.

Certificate programs

Certificate programs are multi-course programs focused on a narrow topic. Compared to designations, they take less time to complete and provide focused knowledge in niche risk management and insurance areas. You’ll receive a certificate of completion when finished.

Online courses

Online courses are short, standalone courses covering emerging trends, insurance fundamentals, and more. Most can be completed in just a few hours and use interactive features, knowledge checks, and videos.
